Autism and Infertility

Do Fertility Drugs Cause Autism?

A recent study that was reported on national TV revealed that the rate of autism
is higher in children of mothers that used fertility drugs. The general purpose of the drugs is to attempt to regulate the hormones to enhance fertilization.
In another small study they found the rate of autism is higher in children of
mothers that had invitro fertilizations. Hormone regulation is a factor here too.

It was suggested that it may not be a drug but the hormone influence of these
therapies.

It is my professional opinion that the researchers may have missed a major link.

Consider that many cases of infertility are related to the toxic body burden.

About 40 medicines intended for use by children have been recalled.  Dr. Manny Alvarez on Fox News stated that the manufacturing facilities were inspected and were in deplorable condition.

Some medications had 2 or 3 times the stated amount of active ingredient. Others had particles in the liquid.  Over dosing of these medications could be very harmful. And some medicines were very low in concentration.

Children’s Tylenol, Tylenol Plus, Children’s Motrin, Zyrtec, and Benadryl were among the 40 drugs recalled.

Health From the Flood?

The historic record flood level we had from the Red River of the North has certainly added stress to the lives of the people with homes and businesses in low lying areas. Nearly everyone in the communities along the river have been affected by the situation.

Benefits from the Flood.

The lessons were learn from this flood can have a great impact on our lives and future. Fortunately this flood was not the type of flood seen from a sudden deluge of water from a dam breaking or a sudden down burst from a thunderstorm. We had time to get ready. We now understand more and can be better prepared next time.

  • We knew about the above normal precipitation last fall.
  • We knew about the moisture in the snow pack in the river’s drainage area.
  • We heard the predictions of flooding.
  • We listened and prepared.

If we had waited to see the water it would have been too late. When the water is in your yard the dikes had better be in place.

How Can You Be Sure You’re Getting Enough Vitamin D?

Realistically, you have just three ways to obtain the vitamin D your body needs.

I’ve long been an advocate that the absolute best way to get vitamin D is through direct sunlight on your skin. It’s the most natural way to acquire your D, and your body self-regulates the amount you receive.

But what if you live in northerly climates where direct sunlight is unavailable for months at a time, as it is in most of the continental U.S.?  Short of moving to Hawaii, you still have two alternatives.

One alternative is to regularly use a tanning bed that utilizes UV-B rays such as the revolutionary tanning beds. Whatever tanning bed you use, please be very sure it includes UV-B rays, so you get the exact rays that provide you optimal health benefits.

Your third alternative is internal supplementation with vitamin D3. We use an inexpensive liquid form.

If you supplement with vitamin D3 you should have your vitamin D levels tested to ensure you do not overdose with it. You and your physician need to be aware of your vitamin D levels so you can adjust your supplementation accordingly. This is a customized approach — not a one-size-fits-all.  Some physicians are wary of vitamin – recommend the vitamin D council website.

Now that the necessary caution is given– studies suggest that most people are deficient in vitamin D — not overdosing with it.

Are You Getting Enough Vitamin D?

Just who is most likely to need vitamin D supplementation? I include some general guidelines here. To be sure of your levels have your levels tested. The toxicity level of vitamin D is very high. One source gave 176,000,000 units per day as lethal. I recommend 4,000 to 6,000 IUs per day. The safety of taking vitamin D can be related to the statement by Dr. Holick that he could support the concept that vitamin D supplementation can be justified living at the equator.

Some population groups are more likely to have lower-than-optimal vitamin D levels than others. But remember that 85% are estimated to be deficient. Are you  one of the 85% — or in one of these groups that may suggest deficiencies?

  • People with limited sunlight exposure. During the long grey winter months in northern latitudes,(most of the US) you may need to supplement your vitamin D3 unless you have access to a safe tanning bed.

However, even during summer many of us spend most of our time indoors. Most people get very little sun exposure during the summer. Your reasons might include working an indoor job during all the peak sunlight hours, avoiding the heat of the day, or cultural dress codes.

Even on the weekend, if it’s rainy, you may miss sun exposure. If that’s your situation, you probably don’t receive the vitamin D you need.

Your car, home, and office windows block most of the sun’s wavelengths that your skin needs to produce vitamin D? So don’t count on getting it indoors — or in your car.

Further, if you live in an industrial area with high-sulfur content air pollution (acid haze) blocking the sun’s rays, your levels are likely low.

Your bare skin needs at least 10-15 minutes of exposure to direct sunlight every day to produce the vitamin D you need. Just as with windows, jackets and long pants also block the sun’s valuable wavelengths.

  • Overweight people. Individuals who are overweight often have considerably higher needs for vitamin D because vitamin D is oil soluble and hidden in their fat.
  • Pregnant women. New evidence suggests that vitamin D levels during pregnancy may be critically important for you and your baby.
  • The elderly. As you age, your skin loses the ability to generate vitamin D. Plus, the elderly tend to spend more time indoors.
  • Dark-skinned people. Darker-skinned people have higher melanin levels, which blocks UVB radiation and limits the body’s ability to produce vitamin D3.

What’s more, vitamin D is very rare in foods, and is only available in very limited quantities in eggs, liver and fatty fish.

So if you’re in one of these groups above, or you spend your winters above 30 degrees latitude, (north of southern Texas or the north of Florida) or otherwise determine that you need vitamin D3 supplementation, I have great news for you…A 3-4 month’s supply of vitamin D3 is about $4.00 per month. Our family is having a very healthy winter.

If you look at the compounding of D deficiency with the body’s toxic burden you can see the need for very powerful actions to improve your health safety.  Using liquid activated zeolite and vitamin D3 is your best choice.

The Truth Behind 8 Babies-Part II

My last writing about the 8 baby news item was about a reason men have become less fertile. Now why women have become less fertile.

The fact that an unmarried woman can become artificially impregnated raises ethical and moral issues indicating  flawed regulatory oversight and personal judgment.

Polycystic ovary syndrome is the most common cause of infertility in women today. An imbalance in the hormones that control release of the egg from the ovary results in an incomplete release  of the egg and the formation of cysts.

Several physicians have written that a major cause of the hormone dysfunction that leads to this condition is affected by a chronic elevation of serum insulin. Insulin is the hormone necessary to control the levels of sugar in the blood. Excessive consumption of refined carbohydrates can cause a chronic elevation in serum insulin.

In our diets of highly processed foods this is a major problem. Various forms of sugar give us the major source of our calories in the United States. Overweight adults make up nearly 70% of the population with nearly 35% being obese. This is just a sign of our poor food selections and excess consumption.

Elevated serum insulin cause excess estrogen in men and excess testosterone in women. When this continues, masculine traits can develop. The testosterone excess interferes with estrogen/progesterone balance and FSH and LH as well. The resulting improper release of the egg contributes to the polycystic ovary syndrome.

It is very likely that a woman’s toxic burden  also contributes to the infertility problems. I have seen dramatic improvement in blood sugar levels when we reduce the toxic burden. This would indicate that the toxins may impair normal receptors on the cell for insulin. Many studies have observed toxic involvement in DNA function. In the last article I discussed the effect of a man’s toxic burden on reduced sperm count.

The Truth Behind 8 Babies.

The recent birth of octuplets to a single parent has raised many questions. Emotional reaction includes disbelief , upset, anger, disgust and fortunately compassion for the children.

This event is the result of scientific advances or lack of advances in reproductive practices. The question that comes to mind is__” why do so many young people today have problems conceiving children”?

Is it a male or female problem?

The reasons for not being able to conceive are numerous. One key factor is the number of sperm produced.  A low sperm count has a significant affect on the ability to conceive.

Is there a current trend of lower sperm counts?

The California Department of Health study revealed that pollution has contributed to a reduction in the sperm counts of an average of 1.5% per year between 1938 and 1990. A 30 year old male today has the sperm count of a grandfather in the 1930’s.

A Scottish study found the median sperm count declined 40% from 1940 to 1969.

A French study found an average male born in 1975 had one fourth the sperm count of a male born in 1925.

It is a combination of heavy metals and chemical toxins that are causing this problem. The pollution is continuing to get worse.

More Bad Journalism Can Make You Sick

Yesterday the newspaper and major news networks featured an article with the headline or introductory statement that indicated  “supplements don’t work”.

The following story didn’t really say that. What recent released research said was that people that took supplements didn’t seem to prevent heart disease or cancer. Also the conclusion was that people that don’t eat a balanced diet still get benefit from a multiple vitamin mineral supplement.

Providing a basic supplement, if it is the right formula, should provide help in preventing disease. I agree. The American Medical Association agrees. The confusion  are many.

  • Most over the counter vitamin-mineral supplements contain mostly synthetic isolated nutrients. That is not what we need! We need a whole food based supplement with the nutrients in the natural molecular form and minerals in the ionized form- read for absorption. Nutrients work in harmony with each other for dynamic health not in isolated and incomplete form.
  • Nearly everyone is not getting what they need from their diet. A study by the Health Awareness Foundation evaluated 26,000 people- not one received the full amount of the nutrients they needed from their diet. Most people were deficient in 2 or more nutrients.
  • People make poor food choices – processed and refined foods, we eat under stress- in a hurry, when we are uptight, eat too fast, eat too much and ………

This research is questionable because it does not clearly state what it was testing. No one would get a grant for testing drugs with such vague concepts.

The journalists use misleading headlines to get our attention. The emotional if not intellectual impression often leads to the wrong conclusion and may have lasting results. When this leads to poor health choices it generates huge amounts of money into the sick care system. Money that would not need to be spent if people made good informed  health care decisions.

Bad science and irresponsible journalism can lead to deadly results. Never read a headline without carefully reading the article and asking the logical questions.
